Why Britain has no frontier AI lab: DeepMind sold for £400M and the world's worst power prices

The author asks why the UK, despite top universities, talent, VCs and London's research-to-startup pipeline, has no frontier AI lab of its own. The answer, he argues, is energy: the UK has the highest industrial electricity prices of any developed country—4x what US firms pay and 50% more than France—while relying on French nuclear power. Compounding the fumble, DeepMind was founded in London in 2010 and sold to Google in 2014 for roughly £400M before anyone grasped its value. He calls it possibly Britain's biggest strategic miss.
