Guardian columnist Adrian Chiles asks: if driverless cars are the answer, what was the question, and who asked for them? He concedes automatic transmissions, satnav, and some safety features have value, but insists a line must be drawn between labour-saving and lobotomising inventions.

He argues driving skill and spatial awareness have been eroded step by step, and cites Zoox robotaxis in San Francisco as novelty-driven tech nobody demanded.
