Cognition's Devin agents factor RSA-260, setting a new public factoring record

jedisct1 · x · 2026-09-10

Eric Lu at Cognition used a fleet of Devin AI software engineers to factor the 260-digit RSA-260, breaking the previous public record of RSA-250 set in February 2020. Along the way, the Devins built what the team calls the world's highest-performance GPU lattice siever, cutting factoring costs 10x below the prior public state of the art. Two key takeaways: hyperscalers or frontier AI labs could likely factor RSA-1024 numbers for roughly $30 million each (and less with further optimization), while RSA-2048 remains about a billion times harder and is not meaningfully affected. The post is also a strong demonstration of Devin's capability to autonomously handle serious systems and numerical engineering work.
