Hash grid fluid sim in VRChat is boundless, dev runs 1M particles across the world
Michael_Moroz_ · x · 2026-09-10
Developer MichaelMoroz implemented hash grid-based fluid simulation inside VRChat. Because it's hash-based, the simulation is literally boundless—fluid can occupy the entire world—with a current cap of 1M particles, enough to fill a decently large space.
Follow-up progress from the same thread:
- At low gravity, fluid flies everywhere with dramatic results
- Inverting gravity direction also works in boundless mode
- Added manipulator objects like an attractor sphere to form globes of fluid
- Demonstrated high-viscosity goop liquid
- Improving the isosurface ray tracer toward PBR with basic screen-space effects; currently only functional in bounded mode, and performance in hash sparse boundless mode is uncertain
