iPhone 18 Pro's Reference mode signs every pixel to prove photos aren't AI-manipulated

The Verge AI · rss · 2026-09-10

Apple is launching "Reference Image" with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup: only photos shot in Reference mode get authenticated. The new camera sensor "signs every pixel it sees," and Private Cloud Compute turns the signed sensor data into an "unalterable reference image" viewable in Photos.

Users can compare the reference image against edited versions to verify whether AI manipulation occurred — a first-of-its-kind provenance scheme on a consumer device.
