Measuring xAI's realtime voice engine: reply latency floors at ~1.3 seconds

Kindly-Duty272 · reddit · 2026-09-10

A developer building a phone agent on xAI's realtime voice engine measured the pre-reply pause with a small script. Server-side end-of-turn detection floors at 1.3s and tuning the silence threshold doesn't help; driving it with your own VAD drops the floor to 1.2s. He also found a fixed opener breaks mid-sentence when callers barge in — writing the opener into the prompt instead fixes it. Tests ran on his open-source SDK patter; he asks whether Deepgram, Cartesia and ElevenLabs have similar server-side floors.
