Google's AlphaGenome Atlas evaluates all 9B single-base genome variants

Google announced AlphaGenome Atlas, a resource aiming to predict the consequences of every possible single-base variant in the human genome.
- The genome is 3 billion bases; testing the three alternative bases at each position means running 9 billion bases through AlphaGenome.
- The system targets non-coding DNA, which makes up most of the genome: some of it regulates protein-coding genes (controlling where/when mRNAs are made and processed), while much is viral and parasitic debris.
- A single software package for all this analysis is valuable, but Ars Technica notes it remains unclear what it offers beyond its training data until biologists adopt it at scale.
