Gary Marcus amplifies DKThomp's takedown of the "China will build it anyway" narrative
GaryMarcus · x · 2026-09-10
Gary Marcus shared Derek Thompson's pointed questions:
- If frontier labs feel obligated to build something dangerous because China will build it anyway, we'd better be really, really sure China actually will. Are we 100% sure the CCP wants an out-of-control, recursively self-improving model?
- We know Chinese models distill American models to keep up with the frontier — so any US slowdown would mechanically slow China too, making the race narrative's premise questionable.
Marcus called these "great questions," echoing his long-standing skepticism of the AI race narrative.
