Dwarkesh Patel lays out why acting now matters:
- As the AI situation gets crazier, an organization started today could become the default institution society delegates important responsibilities to. METR is the example: if an "FINRA for AI" happens, they'll likely just ordain METR "the evaluator."
- Whoever gets delegated important problems should be smart, competent, and technocratic — not whatever random mess government would build otherwise.
- Credibility takes time: METR/Redwood couldn't have landed the Hugging Face investigation if founded last month. Do the conceptual MVP schlepping now, so that as smarter AIs arrive in '27–'28, you can productively spend them.
