Top mathematician leaves math for AI safety job at OpenAI

According to Columbia math professor Peter Woit's blog, a top mathematician has left academic mathematics to work on AI safety at OpenAI.
Woit uses the move to argue that math "as a field is over": even elite mathematical talent is being drawn into AI, a sign of the field's pull on basic-science researchers. The post also touches on what mathematicians can uniquely contribute to AI safety.
