Ladybird Browser Ships Big Month: Twitch Playback, JS Debugging, Rust Migration
unixterminal · x · 2026-09-09
Ladybird, the open-source browser built from scratch outside the Chromium/WebKit/Gecko ecosystems, published its August report:
- Media: Media Source Extensions now support fMP4 plus H.264/H.265/AV1/AAC, enabling adaptive-bitrate playback on Twitch and more YouTube formats including 8K AV1; a batch of playback bugs fixed.
- DevTools: JavaScript debugging, pausable/resumable downloads, session restore, and CSS scroll snap landed.
- Performance & safety: new style engine, layout caching, CSS animations off the main thread, cell-pointer caging, and CSS parsing plus the painting pipeline moved to Rust.
- Funding: entirely sponsor-funded, with $5,000 in new individual sponsorship this month.
The sharer argues more independent engines mean more competition and a healthier open web.
