Alignment researcher Quintin Pope: AI misuse is inevitable, alignment will be haphazard
QuintinPope5 · x · 2026-09-09
In a debate with @DoomNayer, @RichardHanania and @norabelrose, alignment researcher Quintin Pope restated his position:
- AI doing bad things is inevitable: he has long expected misaligned incidents, and sees alignment approaches as haphazard by nature — "we will fuck around and figure it out."
- Against doomer narratives: pushed to write an AI-2027-style forecast story, he argues history resists being turned into coherent stories (economists still debate the causes of the Great Depression and 2008); it's better to point to fundamental drivers of expected trends.
