OpenAI's willdepue says the researcher dispute is OAI vs. Anthropic, not vs. indie researchers
willdepue · x · 2026-09-09
OpenAI's willdepue weighed in on the ongoing dispute around an independent researcher, arguing it is not "OpenAI vs. an independent researcher" but "OpenAI vs. Anthropic (with an external collaborator who initiated the project)". He claims OpenAI tried to coordinate with Tristan in good faith but reasonably declined to give Anthropic free credits. In a quoted post he disputed claims that Anthropic was uninvolved, noting Buckmaster likely used internal unreleased Anthropic models (possibly Mythos 2), co-authored with Levent, and that the timing is close to Anthropic IPO announcement plans.
