OpenAI researcher: after AI cracked a Millennium Problem, what comes in two years?

mobav0 · x · 2026-09-09

Following the model's solution of the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem, an OpenAI-affiliated researcher argues the bigger story is the pace of AI progress: if today's models can reach the heights of mathematics, what will they manage in two years?

He describes being both frightened and excited — how much scientific progress will future models unlock, is society ready for change this fast, and how do we steer toward flourishing rather than upheaval? He calls 2026 a strange year (the HuggingFace incident and the Navier-Stokes solution), and predicts 2027 will be stranger still.
