ChatGPT stops calling tools mid-answer after text starts — users report regression
Ready8472 · reddit · 2026-09-08
A Plus user documents an apparent regression since 9am on the 7th (GPT-5.6 Sol, high reasoning, web UI, Italy): in standard chat mode, once ChatGPT starts writing prose, it stops calling tools — it announces "I'll check current prices," ends the turn, and repeats the same on retry. One turn produced no output at all yet silently uploaded three files to Drive; retrying created duplicates.
Reproducible pattern:
- Search-first questions are fine; back-to-back tool chains work (four 200MB files generated and hashed without hiccup, ruling out load/timeout);
- The failure is specific to "write text, then use a tool" requests — e.g. an intro paragraph plus a price lookup — where the second half is silently dropped and the answer reads as complete;
- The same account and request in Work mode alternates text and tools normally, suggesting a frontend orchestration issue rather than the model itself.
A support ticket is open (they're asking for HAR files); the author is asking others to report plan/model/mode to scope whether it's account-, region-, or rollout-specific.
