30+ agentic AI reference architectures are costing enterprises more than they deliver

Developer David Linthicum cataloged the flood of agentic AI reference architectures: 30-40 published models from analyst firms, consultancies, vendors and influencers, over 100 counting framework variants. His take:
- If everyone has their own reference architecture, nobody does: their value comes from being shared; today's land grab creates fragmented vocabularies and an illusion of disagreement over mostly branding.
- Enterprises are overbuilding: stacking orchestration fabrics, agent registries, governance meshes and observability planes for workloads that need one agent, a few tools, and good logging.
- Technical debt looms: frameworks churn quarterly and are consolidating; heavy bets on one vendor's elaborate stack will likely be deprecated within two years, echoing SOA and early cloud.
- The fix is discipline: start with the simplest architecture that solves the actual problem, earn governance layers through scale. The best reference architecture is one you can explain to a new hire in ten minutes.
