The Monobrain Problem: consulting firms collectively oversell half-baked agentic AI ideas to clients
DavidLinthicum · x · 2026-09-08
A consultant with decades inside and around major consulting firms warns of the 'Monobrain' phenomenon: thousands of smart people stop independently evaluating ideas because public disagreement is career-limiting.
- Brand buys credibility; the hidden cost is adopting the party line on whatever the current big bet is.
- Failure mode: leadership gets excited (agentic AI most often this past year), and the whole firm sells the same half-baked, oversold thinking to hundreds of clients with total confidence. Pushback gets quick agreement in the room and zero change in client deliverables.
- Partners are leaving because they're no longer allowed to hold opinions that matter; lose them, lose their judgment forever.
- The profession's value proposition is independent thought. A strategy requiring unanimous belief isn't a strategy — it's a liability awaiting its exposure date. The author expects public failures before the behavior changes.
