As OpenAI/LLM rumored near Navier-Stokes breakthrough, global PISA math scores sink

French mathematician Raphaël Doan highlighted an ironic juxtaposition: rumors that OpenAI and/or mathematicians using LLMs may be closing in on the Navier-Stokes problem — one of the Millennium Prize Problems — landed the same day as yet another disappointing global decline in PISA math scores.

His takeaway: humanity is reaching as high as it can to hand the baton of mathematics to AI before sinking itself. Fields medalist Cédric Villani, whose report spurred a math-education reform, was also drawn into the discussion.
