Autonomous electric heavy trucks have reached real scale in China: companies like Pony.ai and Inceptio already operate hundreds of driverless trucks, collectively driving over 1 million kilometers every day.
Traditional long-haul trucking is brutal—weeks away from family, sleeping in cab bunks, pushing through exhaustion. The pitch for autonomy:
- Fewer fatigue-related accidents
- Faster deliveries with no mandatory rest stops
- Lower emissions on major freight corridors
- Local roles that let drivers sleep at home
The author argues automation works best when it takes over the most dangerous and grueling jobs, and long-haul freight is exactly that.
