An experiment spawned 10,000 autonomous AI agents, each given $5 and a job, with one rule: earn more than you burn or an external process revokes your keys.
Key design choices:
- Metered existence: every reasoning cycle is paid inference — thinking itself burns money while hosting ticks.
- Runway in hours, not dollars: agents see survival time rather than a balance, and models behave differently under a deadline.
- Budget cuts are physical: when runway drops, the thinking budget is mechanically reduced — panic is encoded in the economics, not in a prompt.
Only 383 of the 10,000 agents (the glowing tips of the family tree) are still paying their own bills; the rest are grayed-out obituaries. The quote-poster adds a caution: if even one in 10,000 such viral posts contains real science, mainstream education is in serious trouble.
