Schmidhuber: no AGI without real-world mastery and self-improving hardware

Mindrust · reddit · 2026-09-08

Jürgen Schmidhuber called claims that AGI has arrived "ridiculous." His argument: today's AI only works in the virtual world behind the screen; no AI robot matches a plumber or even a capuchin monkey, since the physical world is far more demanding. Passing the Turing Test is much easier than True AI and is a poor intelligence measure. Without self-improving hardware—not just self-improving meta-learning software—there is no true self-improvement. AGI requires combining AI software research with machines and robots. He cites Sec. 20 of his arXiv:2212.11279 history of deep learning.
