Surgeons increasingly rely on real-time ultrasound in spinal procedures (no radiation, cheap), but bone is a near-perfect sound reflector: each vertebra casts a deep acoustic shadow, leaving a bright thin shell on B-mode and disjoint fragments instead of a navigable 3-D spine. Recovering the full lumbar shape is an ill-posed inverse problem — the missing data is a systematic absence caused by acoustic occlusion and limited probe angles, not filterable noise. Prior supervised approaches train on synthetic CT-derived "broken" scans and fail when simulated breakage doesn't match reality; ZODIAC instead learns a zero-shot diffusion prior of healthy spines.
