Arm's CSS for Mobile 2 Skips the NPU, Bets On-Device AI on CPU and GPU Engines
ryanshrout · x · 2026-09-08
Arm launched CSS for Mobile 2, and its block diagram contains only a C2 CPU cluster, a Mali G2-Ultra NX GPU, system interconnect, and memory — no NPU.
Key points:
- The Mali GPU carries neural accelerators inside its shader cores for the first time;
- The C2 CPU cluster doubles the SME2 matrix capacity of last year's Lumex design;
- Arm is distributing on-device AI across the two engines already in most shipping Android silicon, rather than concentrating it in a dedicated accelerator.
The positioning signals Arm expects on-device AI to run on the engines phones already have.
