davinci-002 shuts down Sept 28: dev recreates the original GPT experience as a farewell
cephaloform · x · 2026-09-08
OpenAI is retiring davinci-002 on September 28. Developer albfresco marked the occasion by using the new Astra model to rebuild a web version of the original ChatGPT, recreating the era when coding with LLMs "really forced you to understand how the model works." The tribute site runs on his own API key—users just log in with an OpenAI account. Part practical model-sunset news, part nostalgic farewell to the earliest days of AI-assisted coding.
