Schmidhuber: No AGI without self-replicating AI robots mastering the physical world

SchmidhuberAI · x · 2026-09-08

Schmidhuber pushed back on 'AGI is here' claims: no AGI without mastery of the real world, and no true self-improvement without self-improving hardware. Citing Sec. 20 of his [DLH] work, he argues AI-controlled general-purpose robots that learn to operate all human-operated machines offer an obvious path to physical self-replicating machines (SRMs) — tracing the idea from Descartes to von Neumann.
