Senior DeepMind AlphaGo veteran leaves to build AI that 'properly reasons', skeptical of LLMs

One of DeepMind's most senior researchers, part of the AlphaGo team that beat Lee Sedol, has left to build his own AI systems from the ground up. He told the FT that current LLMs can't truly "reason": "we need to go back to the architecture and fundamentally redesign it so that it does proper reasoning."

Unlike many ex-DeepMind founders, he hasn't raised a mega round and is unsure whether he will. The move is notable as a bet by a core architect of the deep learning era that the current paradigm is beyond patching.
