Meta announced that AIRA₃, the next generation of its autonomous AI research system, entered a live Kaggle competition run by NVIDIA in June and won gold, placing 8th out of roughly 4,000 teams — reportedly the first gold ever won by an autonomous AI research system.
- The challenge: fine-tune a 30B Nemotron reasoning model to reason better
- All competitors had identical information and were graded externally on a private test set, making it uncontaminated and a fair eval
- AIRA₃ performed at the level of top human competitors using the same frontier tools
Meta sees this as a reliable signal that AIRA₃ can improve a targeted model capability at a level similar to human experts.
