Why Netflix keeps losing to YouTube: UGC platforms professionalize easier than pro platforms go casual
ZeroStateReflex · x · 2026-10-23
A shared newsletter excerpt argues Netflix's problem goes beyond shrinking attention spans. Netflix over-indexed on young-adult shows, international soaps and "Ryan Reynolds-core action slop" because those genres boost viewership metrics, eroding its cool factor.
The bigger insight is an asymmetry: it's easier for a UGC platform to professionalize than for a professional platform to expand into UGC-style content. YouTube becoming more Netflix-like reads as higher quality to viewers; Netflix becoming more YouTube-like reads as filling up with junk.
