Probing 7,246 Hosted MCP Servers: 46% Alive, 26% Locked Behind OAuth, 20% Dead

After one of his pipeline MCP servers died overnight, the author sent a single initialize request (no creds, 10s timeout) to all 7,246 hosted MCP servers in the official registry. Results: 3,311 (46%) returned valid JSON-RPC, 1,871 (26%) answered 401/403 with proper auth headers — alive but OAuth-locked, correcting his earlier overstated death rate — 1,442 (20%) were truly dead, and 622 (9%) returned non-MCP responses. 85% of verified servers negotiate protocol 2025-06-18, 127 return 402 Payment Required. He shipped the whole pipeline as an API with daily pings and a /v1/changes feed (4€ snapshot, 10€/mo live).
