LLM and a math-built synthetic ecology are alike: pure sampling statistics, likely no mind

Citing a synthetic ecology experiment built entirely from math and physics—where virtual organisms move via coupled dynamical systems, chemotaxis, stochastic motion, spring networks and collision dynamics—the author draws an analogy to large language models: both are driven by sampling statistics, stochastically predicting the next step from the previous token. They look alien, he argues, but probably have no mind. As computation grows vast and dense enough to exceed our comprehension, that's precisely the point—we invented computers to augment our ability to see the future.
