ETH Study: Writing Skills and CS Achievement Predict Vibe Coding Proficiency

A preregistered CHI 2026 study (N=100 university students) tested vibe-coding performance in a purpose-built environment. Both written-communication skill and CS achievement significantly predicted performance, and CS achievement remained significant after controlling for general cognitive skills. The takeaway: AI amplifies rather than levels out ability differences, informing when to teach prompt-writing vs CS fundamentals.
