Defending a16z's Cluely bet: $15M to test the distribution-first thesis
arian_ghashghai · x · 2026-09-06
The author acknowledges Cluely is controversial and many dunk on founder Roy and a16z, but offers an unpopular take applauding the investment: a16z was the first firm to go hard and public on the "distribution is all you need" thesis; Roy was — and still is — the universal yardstick for ragebaiting as a founder strategy; and $15M is a lot objectively, but small relative to a16z's AUM as an experimental bet that put money where their mouth was.
He concedes the distribution/ragebait thesis was wrong on multiple levels, but argues that developing your own thesis, finding the best founder pursuing it, and making a real bet is part of proper investing. The quoted tweet mocks Roy for raising $20M from a16z to run a third-rate content farm like "Asian Mr Beast."
