Do production AI agents actually need an 'Agent SRE'? A developer asks to be proven wrong

A developer publicly challenges his own assumption that the missing piece in AI agent production is an "Agent SRE" — a system to detect derailment, control runaway costs, verify claimed results, and recover tasks. He now suspects most production "agents" aren't autonomous enough for this to hurt yet: they're mostly workflows, cron/event-driven automations, RAG systems, and internal copilots with an LLM in the middle, so a big Agent SRE platform might solve a problem nobody has.
He asks engineers running AI in production six questions:
- What's the most autonomous system you've actually deployed, and does it proceed without human sign-off each step?
- Have you had real incidents — loops, repeated tool calls, hallucinated completion, corrupted state, runaway costs, failed recovery?
- What did you do when it happened: retry, restart, replan, rollback, or manual intervention?
- Do you independently verify that the agent's claimed outcome actually happened?
- If your agent disappeared tomorrow, which reliability/recovery infrastructure would you actually miss?
He stresses he's not selling anything — he wants to know whether this is a real infrastructure problem or a miscalibration of where agentic AI stands today.
