Rumor mill: Anthropic said to have formalized FLT, with OpenAI insiders feeding conflicting accounts
tokenbender · x · 2026-09-06
Mathematician Elliot Glazer recounts, in greentext style, how the rumor that Anthropic solved a Millennium Prize Problem spread through thirdhand tips from OpenAI employees: one source at one point claimed "two" problems were solved before walking it back as garbled. Glazer even posted on Reddit calling the rumor unfounded — only for Terry Tao to coincidentally post a hypothetical about Nesbitt-Stage being solved with Lean specifics the next day, and Anthropic to formalize FLT, forcing another clarification. The saga remains unconfirmed officially, but the signal that Anthropic may be doing frontier-level formal mathematics is itself striking.
