NVIDIA has acquired Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, buying the main front door to open AI: a platform serving 18M+ developers and hosting 3M+ models, whose real strategic value is the route from model discovery to evaluation, optimization, and deployment.
- NVIDIA says HF will remain open across models, clouds, inference providers, and accelerators — but the plausible risk isn't overt lock-in, it's NVIDIA becoming the best-documented, best-optimized default while competitors stay "technically supported."
- Buyers shouldn't grade neutrality by whether AMD/Trainium options still appear in menus; watch launch timing, search visibility, documentation quality, benchmark treatment, and deployment support for non-NVIDIA stacks.
- Practical advice: keep using the hub, but mirror approved artifacts internally and test a second deployment path before you need it.
