Sakana AI's Percept-Lens: a simple rule on frozen vision features detects AI images

Sakana AI will present two complementary studies at ECCV 2026: Percept-Lens, an out-of-distribution evaluation framework that exposes failures of released AI-generated image detectors, and a Mah-NCM-based detector built on a frozen general-purpose visual encoder that recovers a strong real-vs-generated signal with a simple decision rule.
The blog cites landmark misinformation cases — the fictional Trump arrest, the Pope in a puffer coat, the Pentagon explosion hoax, and the Hollywood sign wildfire images — showing synthetic pixels outpace their provenance. Core insight: no fine-tuning needed; frozen visual representations already contain the signal.
