Dev ships patched WebKit via Flatpak overlay to fix drag-and-drop, app stays 40MB
unixterminal · x · 2026-09-05
A .NET/GTK4 developer shared a niche Linux desktop engineering trick for keeping an app at just 40MB while running patched WebKit:
- Rebuild WebKit with custom patches on the same ABI as the GNOME 50 runtime the app uses
- Use a Flatpak overlay to substitute only the necessary libraries, securing and re-enabling drag-and-drop
- The patches are automatically re-applied whenever WebKit updates in the runtime
The author says a blog post detailing the approach is coming soon.
