Anthropic is rolling out the Model Hardware Standard, a system that lets AI agents control lab equipment and autonomously run experiments, extending its reach into the physical world.
- The problem: lab instruments use proprietary interfaces, so connecting a microscope to a robotic arm traditionally takes specialists weeks or months of bespoke software.
- The fix: analogous to its software-focused MCP, the standard provides a common "driver" letting any programmable device describe itself to an AI agent, cutting integration from weeks to minutes.
- Status: open as a research preview to an initial group of labs and manufacturers.
