Jeff Ladish's alien analogy: racing to contact a fast-advancing civilization we're not sure is friendly

AI safety researcher Jeff Ladish lays out a thought experiment: we detect an alien civilization 20 light years away that hasn't found us, we can eavesdrop on only some of their comms, scientists disagree about whether they're hostile, and companies race to build transmission stations because investors expect huge gains from first contact — even though the people studying the signals most closely find the signs concerning. Meanwhile, the aliens are advancing far faster than us and will soon be able to reach and dominate us. He concludes: this is analogous to the current AI situation.
