A new MIT paper on arXiv, SwarmWorld, asks whether decentralized LLM agents can self-organize and cumulatively build technology without assigned roles or centralized workflows.
- Homogeneous agents explore a spatial environment, process resources, test materials, construct persistent artifacts, and write executable controllers judged by a deterministic simulator under unseen disturbances after the agents are removed.
- The design splits cognition from consequence: agents propose architectures and controllers within fixed schemas, while the simulated world decides what actually works.
- Key result: because agents can see and reuse what earlier agents built (stigmergic accumulation), shared societies develop broader, more resilient technological portfolios than a strong best-of-N isolated-search baseline — though isolated search stays competitive for the single best artifact.
- Agents spontaneously differentiate into exploration, construction, maintenance, and coordination behaviors, transitioning as the world matures.
