Oak Ridge National Laboratory details its fully automated atom-by-atom material building system: using individual molecules as bricks and an ultra-sharp microscope tip as the crane, tasks that were once painstaking and easily ruined by human error. AI now controls the process, working over 25 hours straight without an operator, autonomously building custom atom-scale patterns on copper, including an artificial graphene lattice with expected electronic behavior — advancing electronics and quantum materials design.
