TSMC doubles equipment forecast in six months, builds 20 fabs to chase AI demand

Semicon Taiwan 2026 was buoyant — 1,300+ exhibitors, 4,300+ booths, 100,000+ expected visitors — with suppliers convinced AI has kicked off a long growth cycle and that the immediate challenge is simply producing enough.
Key facts:
- TSMC SVP Cliff Hou said he hadn't seen demand grow so quickly — or shift so frequently — in three decades in the industry.
- TSMC's equipment-purchasing forecast, set at end of 2025, had risen to 1.9x the original level by July — nearly doubling in six months.
- TSMC is building 13 fabs in Taiwan and 5-6 overseas, versus a historical norm of 4-5 concurrent projects — a 3-4x construction pace that still isn't enough.
The overall mood: demand is exceptionally strong, but converting it into capacity is getting harder.
