ByteDance to Add 5-6GW of AI Compute in Inner Mongolia, Costing Up to $135B

ByteDance plans to expand its AI data center cluster in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia over the next two years, in preliminary talks with local vendors to add 5-6 gigawatts of compute, targeting delivery by early 2028, SCMP reports.
- Per a Soochow Securities estimate (160 billion yuan / $23.8B per GW upfront), the cluster could cost 800-960 billion yuan in total.
- The Jining district site already hosts compute investments from Huawei, Kuaishou, Alibaba and Apple.
- The push follows ByteDance's reported $29.6B syndicated loan — the latest sign of Chinese tech giants ramping AI infrastructure. ByteDance declined to comment.
