OpenAI ships GPT-6 Astra with 97.6% on FrontierMath Tier 4, declares the AGI era

OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra in the early hours of Sept 4, two days after Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.1. Sam Altman said the delay was to meet safety and alignment standards for this capability level, amid pressure from Anthropic that saw annualized revenue overtaken in May.
- Bumpy launch: the blog post leaked then was pulled, the official link broke, and ChatGPT/Claude/Grok all went down hours before; Greg Brockman posted 'Welcome to the AGI era'.
- Benchmarks: 97.6% on FrontierMath Tier 4 (v2), vs Fable 5's 87.8%, Opus 5's 73.2%, and predecessor GPT-5.6 Sol's 80.5% (footnote notes the chat Sol differs from the API/Codex version).
- Availability: rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise within days, usage counted against existing subscription quotas.
