ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok all went down at nearly the same time—and nobody knows why

WIRED reports that frontier models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI suffered rare near-simultaneous outages Thursday morning:
- xAI/SpaceX: Grok's outage stemmed from "an outage at our Memphis compute center"; the company apologized to impacted compute partners. Anthropic and xAI announced a compute partnership with SpaceX in May.
- OpenAI: a routing error around 7:43 am PT made ChatGPT and Codex unavailable for some users; fixed by 8:17 am PT.
- Anthropic: a partial outage from 6:23 am PT hit Claude Mythos 5.1, Fable 5.1, and Opus 5 with elevated errors; resolved by 9:16 am PT.
The timing fueled speculation about a shared third-party provider, but neither OpenAI nor Anthropic cited an external cause.
