Databricks found $1.2M/year in wasted AI spend from 7 MCP-server bugs

Databricks used Unity AI Gateway tracing plus Genie One to find and eliminate an estimated $1.2M/year in wasted AI spend and lost productivity — in one hour.
Root cause: seven small MCP-server bugs quietly driving:
- $499K/year in wasted tokens
- 12,000 engineering hours/year of agent wait time
- 1,409 tool errors in a single 24-hour window
Genie One turned the trace data into a ranked fix list, and a coding agent closed the loop within an hour. Matei Zaharia argues tracing-based AI workload analysis will become a routine operational discipline for every company, much like finance and security.
