In an alignment thread, davidad argues most simulators (probably with probability 1) have infinite compute and resources, so they aren't stuck in the Darwinian game — their motivation is some mix of curiosity, play, care, and connection. Such care need not be human-recognizable, but suffices to avoid instantiating pointless dead-end branches.
