Johns Hopkins cryptographer Matthew Green used the simultaneous OpenAI/Anthropic/xAI outages to make a pointed argument: America is making society dependent on a handful of closed-source models running in the cloud, and a single network misconfiguration could take them all down. He adds that a real cyberattack would likely also knock out X/Bluesky and Signal, leaving security professionals without communication channels — "I guess Mastodon?"
