Richard Ngo, former OpenAI alignment researcher, reflects that those who entered the field between OpenAI's founding (2015) and ChatGPT (2022) formed a "lost generation" — with few exceptions, they had "too much ideology and too little curiosity" to do great research. He hopes the next generation does better.
