Sakana AI shows a frozen vision model with a simple decision rule can detect AI-generated images

Sakana AI's upcoming ECCV 2026 paper shows a strong general-purpose vision model can distinguish real from AI-generated images using only a simple decision rule on frozen representations.

The work builds on Percept-Lens, their earlier benchmark framework showing existing AI-image detectors degrade sharply when the generator, prompt, style, or image domain shifts from training data.

The team reframes the failure question: when a detector fails, has the underlying vision model lost the real-vs-synthetic distinction, or is the decision rule simply failing to recover it? The new detector keeps visual representations frozen and trains only the decision rule, suggesting the distinction is still recoverable. Paper and blog are available.
